The itinerary starts in front of the small church of St. Barbara, near the headstone monument built in nineteenth century in honor of Lord Brassey (owner of Ingurtosu mines). Cover this route is certainly fascinating and allows us to totally immerse ourself in archaeology mines where everything knows of mining, history, tale and legends of past life. Today, only a few dozen people have decided not to leave the village of Ingurtosu, while the Sardinian deer, allowing us brief encounters, he decided that maybe he could become the undisputed king of this nature identified by the EU as a Site of Community Importance.

The path moves in one of the most beautiful places on the south west coast of Sardinia. A incredible journey into a fascinating and exciting nature of the Mediterranean, it is varied and bizarre, following ancient paths created by the miners, the comings and goings of the goats yet present plus many coal miners and loggers who have populated the area. You will have the opportunity to browse through the pages of the mining history among the most important in the European scene and reading on the rock the fossil and geological events on Earth started 580 million years ago: a completely unique experience in an area so narrow.

THE SAINT MICHELE PEAK AND THE  SAINT GIOVANNI CAVE

It is an exciting loop route that starts from the majestic entrance of the cave “San Giovanni” to reach "Punta San Michele" the highest peak of the massif of "Marganai". From here an old cart track dates back to the southern slopes of Punta San Michele, covering first the wooded saddle between "Mount Acqua" and "Punta Su Forru", then the region of "Su Corovau" where between the 800 and the mid '900 the English company "Marganai Mining and Forest" acquired the grant, then it was transferred to the company Monteponi for the cultivation of argentiferous galena (lead and silver), calamine (zinc minerals).

ANCESTORS OF PERDAS ALBAS & SCIVU

The path is a continuous discovery of archaeological structures: the tombs of the giants, nuragical wells full yet of water, linear and circular megalithic walls, everything in short, can make us imagine a few moments in the life of that population which lived more than 3,500 years ago. It is dominated by 478 meters of peak Mount Su Guardianu and its offshoots covered with Mediterranean vegetation, the granite promontory of Capo Pecora marks the beginning of the itinerary.

FROM FUNTAMARE TO MASUA

The stretch of coast from Funtanamare to Masua is among the most beautiful and famous of Sardinia, it is enriched by frequent breath-taking sunsets and five stacks (faraglioni), with polychrome rock. The first "faraglione" which emerges from the sea coming from the south, is named "del morto"(dead stack), known by locals as the rock of Portu Raffa. Further north you find “Pan di Zucchero", "with its 133 meters overhanging the sea is considered to be the biggest reef in the Mediterranean.

THE MONTEPONI MINE

The Monteponi mine was the most important of the whole metallic basin of Iglesias and among the best known in Europe for the exploitation of galena and calamines. The tour begins from the guesthouse built in 1904, you continue through the tree-lined avenue in bloom, where the entire wall of the vast living room is decorated with a fresco of Aligi Sassu, it was built in 1950 in honour of the millennial work in the mines.

FROM BUGGERRU TO CALA DOMESTICA

The route is walkable in both directions, following the line of coast between the town of Buggerru, the "fjord" of Cala Domestica, crossing unusual natural environments with rare botanical species and rich in mining history. Encountering rock arches, peaks and cliffs of limestone polychrome dating back over half a billion years ago (the Lower Cambrian) in a cobalt-blue sea.

MONTEVECCHIO BETWEEN DEERS AND MINES

Montevecchio is a mining village that has had its period of glory between the late ‘800 and early ‘900. Ceased the mining activity, nature has reoccupied its space and now we can visit the area observing the remains of mine. Among these places the deers wander free and they inhabit these places with an abundant population. The landscape is unique, dominated by the Monte Arcuentu which seems to look from a short distance the new life of this mining village.
