In the morning we ride along the rugged coastline that connects Alghero to Bosa, who gave us unforgettable 40km with constant up and down, through cliffs, coves and lovely views. From Bosa we take the hills of Planargia that, through Malvasia vineyards, lead us into Montiferru’s forests. Here we challenge the longest climb of the day, known as La Madonnina, which brings us to almost a thousand meters above sea level, before reaching Santulussurgiu, where we stop for the night to enjoy a fantastic dinner and a deserved rest in the silence of his enchanted historical center.
From the heart of the volcanic massif of Montiferru, we descend gradually to the Tirso valley, that we cross twice before to reach the ancient Roman thermal settlement of Fordongianus (ancient Forum Traiani) on the Tirso river banks. From here starts a challenging but beautiful climb, which brings us to the woods of chestnut of Aritzo, in the middle of the Barbagia di Belvì, passing through the town of Samugheo, which is known for its handmade carpets of excellent workmanship and for the full bodied Mandrolisai wine.
We leave behind the rocky profile of Texile and we set off downhill towards Gadoni, and the Flumendosa valley, which we follow the course up to the gates of Ogliastra. Here you will be surprised by the wild beauty of nature, where the action of erosion of the river and its tributaries have carved valleys, creating bizarre shapes of the rocks, such as the characteristic "Heels", which are of limestone plateaus with high white cliffs, which make unique landscapes of this beautiful corner of Sardinia. The canyon that closes the lake Flumendosa anticipates the arrival of the plateau Orroli, village symbol of longevity in Sardinia, from which a long descent towards the sea and the fertile countryside of Muravera.
The lagoons inhabited by pink flamingos and other elegant lagoon birds, which line the most generous citrus groves of Sardinia, give way to the charm of the coast and to the dream beaches of the Marine Protected Area of Capo Carbonara (www.ampcapocarbonara.it). From Villasimius we continue along a fun route, consisting of continuous up and down in a suggestive succession of cliffs and white sandy beaches, granite hills and ancient spanish towers. Finally, a nice bike path, which runs along the Poetto beach, leads us to the center of Cagliari. Today will be very difficult to avoid the temptation to take a dip in one of the many beaches with crystal clear water, we will be spoiled for choice: Feraxi, Piscina Rei, Cala Sinzias, Cala Pira, Punta Molentis, Simius, Notteri, Porto Sa Ruxi, Solanas, Torre delle Stelle, Geremeas, Mari Pintau, Cala Regina e infine il Poetto di Cagliari.
It's time to say “arrivederci”! But before leaving, as Cagliari city center is just 20 minutes by shuttle bus from the airport (CAG), and if your schedule allows it, we recommend a stroll through the picturesque streets of the historic center and admire the wonderful views from the terraces di Castello, or enjoying some gourmet delicacy in one of the local trattorias.
